திருக்குறள்:
தானம் தவம்இரண்டும் தங்கா வியன்உலகம்
வானம் வழங்கா தெனின்.
பொருள்:
மழை பெய்யாமல் பொய்த்துப் போகுமானால், அகன்ற இந்த உலகத்தில் பிறர்க்குக் கொடுக்கும் தானமும், தம் பொருட்டு மேற்கொள்ளும் தவமும் நிலைபெறாமல் போகும்.
விரிவாக்கம்:
வான்மழை பொழிந்து உலகம் செழிப்பாக இருந்தால் மட்டுமே மனிதர்களால் அறச்செயல்களாகிய தானங்களையும், ஆன்மிக நெறியாகிய தவத்தையும் மேற்கொள்ள முடியும். மழை பொய்ப்பதால் ஏற்படும் வறட்சியும் வறுமையும் மக்களின் நற்சிந்தனைகளையும் நல்வழிகளையும் முடக்கிவிடும். எனவே, உலகில் தானமும் தவமும் தொடர்ந்து நிலைத்திருக்க வான்மழையே அடிப்படை என்பதை இக்குறள் எடுத்துரைக்கின்றது.

Meaning:
If the heavens do not grant rain, neither charity nor penance will endure within this vast world.
Explanation:
Generosity and spiritual practice thrive only when society is peaceful and prosperous. When severe drought strikes due to lack of rain, basic survival becomes the primary struggle, suppressing people's capacity to perform acts of charity or dedicate themselves to spiritual austere penance. Rain is thus the essential foundation for moral and spiritual virtues.
