திருக்குறள்:
செயற்கரிய செய்வார் பெரியர் சிறியர்
செயற்கரிய செய்கலாதார்.
பொருள்:
செய்வதற்கு அருமையான செயல்களைச் செய்து முடிப்பவரே பெரியோர்; செய்வதற்கு அரிய அத்தகைய செயல்களைச் செய்ய இயலாதவர் சிறியோர்.
விரிவாக்கம்:
மனிதர்களின் வாழ்வினில் சாமானிய மனிதர்களால் செய்ய முடியாத அரிய காரியங்களையும், ஐம்புலன்களையும் அடக்கும் கடினமான நற்செயல்களையும் முனைப்புடன் செய்து முடிப்பவர்களே சான்றோர்களால் 'பெரியோர்' எனப் போற்றப்படுவர். அத்தகைய அரிய செயல்களை முயற்சியின்மையால் செய்யத் தவறுபவர்கள் 'சிறியோர்' என கருதப்படுவர் என்பதை இக்குறள் எடுத்துரைக்கின்றது.

Seyarkariya Seykalaathaar.
Meaning:
Great people are those who achieve noble tasks that are extremely difficult for others to accomplish; those who cannot do such challenging deeds are small-minded.
Explanation:
The true mark of greatness lies in accomplishing extraordinary and noble goals, such as mastering self-control and acting for the greater good, which ordinary people find difficult. Those who lack the effort or determination to achieve such meaningful tasks remain minor in character and stature.
