திருக்குறள்:
அழுக்காறு அவாவெகுளி இன்னாச்சொல் நான்கும்
இழுக்கா இயன்றது அறம்.
பொருள்:
பொறாமை, பேராசை, சினம், கடுஞ்சொல் ஆகிய இந்நான்கு குற்றங்களுக்கும் இடம் தராமல் வாழ்வதே உண்மையான அறமாகும்.
விரிவாக்கம்:
பிறரது வளர்ச்சியைக் கண்டு பொறாமை கொள்ளாமலும், தேவையற்றப் பொருள்களின் மீது பேராசை படாமலும் இருக்க வேண்டும். அதேபோல, கோபத்தைக் கட்டுப்படுத்தி, பிற மனம் புண்படும் படியான கடுஞ்சொற்களையும் பழிச்சொற்களையும் பேசாமல் ஆக்கப்பூர்வமாகப் பேச வேண்டும். மனிதர்கள் இந்த நான்கு தீய குணங்களையும் தங்கள் வாழ்க்கையிலிருந்து முழுமையாகத் தவிர்த்து வாழ்வதே மேன்மையான அறநெறியாகும் என்பதை இக்குறள் எடுத்துரைக்கின்றது.
