திருக்குறள்:
அறவாழி அந்தணன் தாள்சேர்ந்தார்க் கல்லால்
பிறவாழி நீந்தல் அரிது.
பொருள்:
அறக்கடலாக விளங்கும் இறைவனின் திருவடிகளைச் சார்ந்தவர்க்கன்றி, மற்றவர்களால் பிறவியாகிய மற்றைய கடல்களைக் கடப்பது கடினமாகும்.
விரிவாக்கம்:
மனிதர்களின் இந்த மாய வாழ்க்கையில், அறத்தின் வடிவமாகத் திகழும் இறைவனின் திருவடிகளைச் சரணடைபவர்களே வாழ்வில் எதிர்கொள்ளும் பொருள், இன்பம் மற்றும் பிறவிசார்ந்த சவால்களை எளிதாகக் கடக்க முடியும். இறைவனின் அறநெறியைப் பின்பற்றாதவர்கள், உலகியல் மாயைகளாகிய சுற்றம், சுகம், உடைமை போன்ற கடல்களில் சிக்கித் தவிப்பரே அன்றி அதிலிருந்து மீள முடியாது என்பதை இக்குறள் எடுத்துரைக்கின்றது.
