திருக்குறள்:

விண்நின்று பொய்ப்பின் விரிநீர் வியனுலகத்து

உள்நின்று உடற்றும் பசி.

பொருள்:

மழைக்காலத்தில் மழை பெய்யாமல் பொய்த்துவிடுமானால், கடல் நீரால் சூழப்பட்ட அகன்ற இந்த உலகத்தில், பசி உயிர்களின் உள்ளே நின்று நிலைத்து வருத்தும்.

விரிவாக்கம்:

வான்மழை புவிமீது உரிய காலத்தில் பொழியாவிட்டால், மண்ணில் வாழும் உயிரினங்கள் பசியாலும் தாகத்தாலும் சொல்லொணாத் துயரத்திற்கு ஆளாக நேரிடும். மழை இல்லாதபோது பசுமையான பயிரினங்கள் முளைக்காமல் கருகிவிடும்; புவியியல் ரீதியாக வறட்சி நிலை காணப்படும். கடல் நீர் சூழ்ந்த உலகமாக இருந்தாலும், உயிர்கள் பசியின்றி வாழ மழைநீர் பொழிவது மிகவும் அவசியமானது என்பதை இக்குறள் எடுத்துரைக்கின்றது. தினமும் ஒரு குறளும் பொருளும் விரிவாக்கமும். பாலாஜி பாலசுப்பிரமணியம்.

Meaning:

If the clouds fail to yield rain, severe hunger will torment and afflict all beings within this vast ocean-encircled world.

Explanation:

Even though the earth is surrounded by abundant sea waters, marine water cannot sustain agriculture or satisfy human thirst. Without timely rainfall, crops wither, land turns arid, and severe drought leads to widespread famine. Rain is indispensable to shield the world from suffering and starvation.
