திருக்குறள்:

நீரின் றமையா துலகெனின் யார்யார்க்கும்

வானின் றமையா தொழுக்கு.

பொருள்:

நீர் இல்லாமல் உலக வாழ்க்கை அமையாது என்றால், எப்பேர்ப்பட்டவர்க்கும் மழை இல்லையென்றால் ஒழுக்கமான வாழ்வு நிலைபெறாமல் போகும்.

விரிவாக்கம்:

நீர் இல்லாமல் மனிதர்கள், விலங்குகள், தாவரங்கள் என எந்த உயிரினமும் இந்த உலகில் வாழ முடியாது. அந்த நீரைத் தந்து உலகைக் காக்கும் வான்மழை பொய்த்துப்போனால், வறட்சியும் வறுமையும் கூடி மக்களின் நன்னடத்தையும் ஒழுக்கமும் நிலைபெறாமல் அழிந்துபோகும். எனவே, உலக உயிர்களின் வாழ்விற்கும், சமூகத்தின் நன்னெறிக்கும் அடிப்படையாக விளங்குவது வான்மழையே என்பதை இக்குறள் எடுத்துரைக்கின்றது.
