திருக்குறள்:

சுவைஒளி ஊறுஓசை நாற்றமென ஐந்தின்

வகைதெரிவான் கட்டே உலகு.

பொருள்:

சுவை, ஒளி, ஊறு (தொடு உணர்ச்சி), ஓசை, நாற்றம் (மணம்) எனும் ஐம்புலன்களின் தன்மைகளையும் ஆராய்ந்து அறியும் அறிவுடையவனிடத்திலேயே இந்த உலகத்தின் இயல்பு அடங்கியுள்ளது.

விரிவாக்கம்:

மனிதர்களுக்கு இறைவன் அளித்த ஐம்புலன்களின் வழியே பெறப்படும் அறிவை வெறுமனே அனுபவிப்பதோடு நிறுத்திக் கொள்ளாமல், அவற்றின் நல்லியல்பு மற்றும் தீய இயல்புகளைத் துல்லியமாக ஆராய்ந்து வாழ வேண்டும். அவ்வாறு நல்வழியில் இயங்கும் பேரறிவு பெற்ற சான்றோர்களின் வழிகாட்டுதலில்தான் இந்த உலகமே இயங்குகின்றது என்பதை இக்குறள் எடுத்துரைக்கின்றது.

Meaning:

The essence and destiny of the world rest in the hands of the one who understands the true nature of the five senses: taste, sight, touch, sound, and smell.

Explanation:

Human life experiences the universe through five distinct senses. A wise person does not merely indulge in them but analyzes their deeper nature and exercises wisdom. The order and wisdom of the entire world depend on such enlightened individuals who master their knowledge of these senses.
