திருக்குறள்:

மனத்துக்கண் மாசிலன் ஆதல் அனைத்துஅறன்

ஆகுல நீர பிற.

பொருள்:

ஒருவன் தன் உள்ளத்தில் குற்றம் இல்லாதவனாக இருக்க வேண்டும்; அதுவே அறமாகும். மற்றவை எல்லாம் வெறும் ஆரவாரத் தன்மையுடைய வெளிப்பூச்சுகளே ஆகும்.

விரிவாக்கம்:

மனிதர்கள் தங்களுடைய மனதை எண்ணங்களாலும் செயல்களாலும் தூய்மையாக வைத்துக்கொண்டு, குற்றமற்ற வாழ்க்கை வாழ வேண்டும். அதுவே உண்மையான அறநெறியாகும். மனத்தில் தூய்மை இல்லாமல், பிறருக்குக் காட்டுவதற்காகச் செய்யப்படும் அறச்செயல்கள் அனைத்தும் ஊருக்காக நல்லவர்களாகக் காட்டிக் கொள்ளும் போலி ஆரவாரமே தவிர, அதில் உண்மை இல்லை என்பதை இக்குறள் எடுத்துரைக்கின்றது.

To be spotless in mind is the essence of all virtue; everything else is mere empty show and pomp.

True righteousness stems from purity of heart and mind rather than external displays. A person must strive to live a life free of malice, deceit, and moral flaws. Any show of goodness that lacks inner purity is merely ostentatious pretense and carries no genuine ethical value.
