பொருள்:
உழவுத்தொழில் செய்து வாழ்பவரே சுதந்திரமாக வாழ்பவர்; மற்ற தொழில்களைச் செய்து வாழ்பவர்கள் அனைவரும் பிறரை வணங்கி, அவருக்குப் பின் செல்பவரே ஆவர்.
விரிவாக்கம்:
உலகத்துத் தொழில்களிலேயே முதன்மையானதும் சிறப்பானதுமாக விளங்குவது உழவர் செய்யும் உழவுத்தொழிலே ஆகும். ஏனைய தொழில்களைச் செய்து வாழும் மக்களுக்கும், நிலத்தை உழுது, பயிர் செய்து, உணவாக மாற்றி உயிர் வாழ உதவும் உணவை வழங்குபவர்கள் உழவர்களே. அதனால் தான் மனிதர்களாகிய நாம் அனைவரும் உயிர் வாழ்கிறோம்; உழவர்கள் இன்றி நமக்கு உயிரில்லை என்பதை இக்குறள் நமக்குத் தெளிவாக எடுத்துரைக்கின்றது.உடல் மண்ணுக்கு உயிர் தமிழுக்கு திருக்குறள் என்றும் இந்த உலகிற்கு.

Those who live by farming are the ones who truly live free; all others live by bowing to and following them.
Elaboration:
Among all the occupations in the world, the most primary and noble is agriculture practiced by farmers. It is the farmers who plow the land, cultivate crops, transform them into food, and provide sustenance for people engaged in all other professions to survive. That is why all of us human beings are able to live; this Kural clearly emphasizes that without farmers, we have no life.
