English Translation:
Thirukkural:
Ullinum Theeraap Perumagizh Seydhalaal
Kallinum Kaamam Inidhu.
Meaning:
Love is far sweeter than wine, for merely remembering past moments of love creates an undiminishing, immense delight.
Explanation:
The maiden draws a striking comparison between the pleasure of wine and the joy of love. Intoxicating wine grants pleasure only at the moment it is consumed. Love, however, possesses the unique power to grant unceasing and boundless joy even during separation, simply through the sweet act of remembrance. Because the memory of past love continuously rejuvenates the heart with vast happiness long after the union, love proves itself to be infinitely superior and sweeter than wine.
