English Translation:
Thirukkural:
Punkanne Vaazhi Marulmaalai Emkelpol
Vankanna Thonin Thunai.
Meaning:
May you prosper, O bewildering evening! You too appear dim-eyed with distress; is your companion as hard-hearted as my lover?
Explanation:
As the daylight fades into darkness, the maiden views the dimming twilight as a fellow sufferer who shares her sorrow. Addressing the evening directly as a companion in grief, she notes its dull and mournful appearance as the sun departs. With poignant empathy, she asks whether the evening's absent partner is equally pitiless and unfeeling as her own lover, whose prolonged departure has left her in deep emotional gloom.
