123/1223:திருக்குறள்:

பனிஅரும்பிப் பைதல்கொள் மாலை

துனிஅரும்பித் துன்பம் வளர வரும்.

பொருள்:

முன்பெல்லாம் குளிர்ச்சியான பனித் துளிகளை அரும்பச் செய்து, மெல்ல இருள் சூழ்ந்து வந்த மாலைப் பொழுதானது, இன்று என் காதலன் இல்லாத தனிமையில் வெறுப்பினைத் தோற்றுவித்து, என் பிரிவுத் துயரைப் பெருக்கிக் கொண்டு வருகின்றது.

விரிவாக்கம்:

தலைவன் உடனிருந்த காலத்தில், மாலைக் காலம் என்பது குளிர்ந்த பனித் திவலைகளோடும், இனிய அமைதியோடும் தோன்றி மகிழ்ச்சியையே தந்தது. ஆனால், அதே மாலை வேளை தலைவன் பிரிந்து சென்றுள்ள இப்போதைய சூழலில் தலைகீழாக மாறிவிட்டது. "முன்பு என் மனதிற்கு இன்பம் தந்த பொன்மாலைப் பொழுது, இப்போது என் தலைவன் அருகில் இல்லாததால், என் உள்ளத்தில் வாழ்க்கையின் மீதான வெறுப்பை (துனி) அரும்பச் செய்கிறது. அதுமட்டுமன்றி, அந்தி இருள் படரப் படர, என் நெஞ்சில் வாட்டும் பிரிவுத் துன்பத்தை மேன்மேலும் வளர்க்கும் ஒரு கொடிய காரணியாகவே வந்து சேர்கிறது" என்று தலைவி மாலைப் பொழுதின் கொடுமையைக் கண்டு நைந்து உருகி எடுத்துரைப்பதாக இக்குறள் அமைகின்றது.

The evening, which once arrived with gentle dew and soft darkness, now arrives generating bitterness and swelling my grief in separation.

Explanation:

The maiden highlights how the character of twilight shifts based on the presence of love. When her beloved was by her side, the arrival of evening brought pleasant cool dew drops and a tranquil atmosphere. However, in his painful absence, the very same hour transforms into a tormentor. As dusk descends, it no longer offers comfort; instead, it causes despair and resentment to bud within her heart, steadily expanding the magnitude of her emotional suffering as night approaches.
