123/1225:திருக்குறள்:

காலைக்குச் செய்தநன்று என்கொல் எவன்கொல்யான்

மாலைக்குச் செய்த பகை.

பொருள்:

காலை வேளை எனக்கு நன்மையைச் செய்வதற்கு நான் அதற்குக் செய்த உதவிதான் என்ன? மாலை வேளை எனக்குத் தீமையையும் துன்பத்தையும் தருவதற்கு நான் அதனிடம் செய்த பகையோ என்னவோ?

விரிவாக்கம்:

பொழுதுகளின் மாற்றத்தில் தான் அடையும் வேதனையை வியந்து தலைவி இக்குறளில் புலம்புகிறாள். இரவின் கொடிய இருள் விலகி காலை பொழுதானது விடியும்போது, அது தலைவியின் பிரிவுத் துயரைச் சற்றுத் தணித்து அவளுக்கு நம்பிக்கையையும் ஆறுதலையும் தருகிறது. ஆனால், அந்தி வேளையாகிய மாலைப் பொழுதோ வந்தவுடன் அவளது தனிமைத் துயரத்தைக் கூட்டி உயிரையே வாட்டுகிறது. "என் துயரைப் போக்கும் காலைப் பொழுதிற்கு நான் எந்தப் புண்ணியமும் செய்யவில்லை; அதே போல் என் உயிரைக் குடிக்கும் மாலைப் பொழுதிற்கு நான் எந்தக் கெடுதலும் செய்யவில்லை. அப்படியிருக்க, காலை வேளை எனக்கு நன்மையையும், மாலை வேளை எனக்கு மாறாத தீமையையும் வாரி வழங்குவது ஏன் என்று எனக்குப் புரியவில்லையே!" என்று தன் இதயக் குமுறலைத் தலைவி நயம்பட எடுத்துரைப்பதாக இக்குறள் அமைகின்றது.

Meaning:

What good have I ever done for the morning that it favors me, and what enmity have I committed against the evening that it torments me so?

Explanation:

The maiden marvels in despair at the stark contrast between how dawn and dusk affect her spirit. The arrival of morning brings a temporary respite from the dark gloom of night, easing her heartache and restoring a sense of hope. Conversely, the arrival of evening plunges her back into intense loneliness and agonizing grief. Perplexed by these opposing emotions, she questions what virtue she showed to the morning to earn its gentle mercy, and what grave offense she committed against the evening to deserve its relentless cruelty.
