124/1233:திருக்குறள்:

தணந்தமை சால அறிவிப்ப போலும்

பசந்து பனிவாரும் கண்.

பொருள்:

பசலை நிறம் அடைந்து, கண்ணீர் துளிகளை இடைவிடாமல் சிந்தும் என்னுடைய கண்கள், என் தலைவர் என்னை விட்டுப் பிரிந்து சென்ற கொடுமையை இந்த உலகிற்கு மிகத் தெளிவாக அறிவிப்பவை போலத் தோன்றுகின்றன.

விரிவாக்கம்:

தன் காதலன் பிரிந்து சென்ற துயரத்தை வெளியே காட்டாமல் மறைக்க நினைத்தாலும், தலைவியின் கண்கள் அவளுக்குக் கட்டுப்படாமல் உண்மையை வெளிப்படுத்தி விடுகின்றன. "என் நெஞ்சமே! என் தலைவர் பிரிந்து போன தகவலை நான் யாருக்கும் சொல்லாமல் மறைக்கவே விரும்புகிறேன். ஆனால், காதலனைக் காணாத ஏக்கத்தால் பசலை நிறம் பாய்ந்து, துயரக் கண்ணீரைப் பொழியும் என் கண்கள், 'அவர் இவளைப் பிரிந்து சென்றுவிட்டார்' என்ற செய்தியை ஊரார் அனைவருக்கும் வெளிப்படையாகப் பறைசாற்றுவது போல அமைந்துவிட்டன" என்று தன் கண்களின் கட்டுப்பாடற்ற நிலையையும் பிரிவுத் துயரத்தின் மிகுதியையும் தலைவி நயம்பட எடுத்துரைப்பதாக இக்குறள் அமைகின்றது.

Meaning:

My eyes, turning pale and brimming with tears, seem to loudly proclaim to the entire world that my lover has departed and left me.

Explanation:

The maiden attempts to conceal her inner suffering and hide the fact that her lover has left her side. However, her body refuses to cooperate with her discretion. Her eyes, filled with the pale hue of yearning and endlessly spilling drops of tears, betray her inner agonizing sorrow. She laments that her very eyes have become public heralds, openly broadcasting to everyone in town the painful truth of her lover's desertion and her desperate longing for his return.
