124/1237:திருக்குறள்:

பாடு பெறுதியோ நெஞ்சே கொடியார்க்குஎன்

வாடுதோள் பூசல் உரைத்து.

பொருள்:

என் நெஞ்சமே! என் மீது இரக்கமின்றிப் பிரிந்து சென்ற அக்கொடிய தலைவரிடம் சென்று, அவவரது பிரிவால் என் தோள்கள் வாடி இளைத்துப்போய் ஊராரால் அலர் உண்டாகும் ஆரவாரச் செய்தியைக் கூறி, அவரிடமிருந்து எனக்கு நன்மையோ அல்லது நமக்கு ஒரு பெருமையையோ பெற்றுத் தருவாயா?

விரிவாக்கம்:

தலைவனின் பிரிவால் தலைவியின் உடல் மெலிந்து, தோள்கள் இளைக்கின்றன. இதைக் கண்டு ஊரார் அவளைப் பற்றிப் பழியாகவும் ஆரவாரமாகவும் பேசத் தொடங்குகின்றனர் (அலர் தூற்றுதல்). இந்நிலையைக் கண்டு வருந்தும் தலைவி, தன் நெஞ்சத்தை நோக்கி வினவுகிறாள். "என் நெஞ்சமே! என் மீது சிறிதும் அன்பின்றி விட்டுச் சென்ற அக்கொடியவரிடம் நீ தூதாகச் செல்ல மாட்டாயா? சென்று, 'உமது பிரிவால் அவளது தோள்கள் வாடிப்போயின; அதனால் ஊரே உங்களைப் பழித்துப் பேசுகிறது' என்ற செய்தியை உரக்கக் கூறி, அவரைச் சிந்திக்க வைத்து, அவர் மீண்டும் திரும்பி வரும்படிச் செய்து ஏதேனும் ஒரு பெருமையைப் பெற்றுத் தருவாயா?" என்று தன் துயரையும் தோள்களின் இளைப்பையும் தூதாக அனுப்பும் நயத்தோடு எடுத்துரைக்கின்றாள்.

Meaning:

O my heart! Can you earn us any honor or relief by going to that cruel lover and recounting the turmoil caused by my withered, wasting shoulders?

Explanation:

The maiden suffers severe physical emaciation due to her lover's prolonged absence, causing her shoulders to shrink and triggering widespread gossip throughout the town. Overwhelmed by this disgrace and distress, she urges her restless heart to act as an emissary. She asks whether her heart can travel to that unfeeling lover, inform him of the public clamor and her frail physical state, and successfully persuade him to return—thereby reclaiming her lost dignity and bringing peace to her aching soul.
