124/1240:திருக்குறள்:

கண்ணின் பசப்போ பருவரல் எய்தின்றே

ஒண்ணுதல் செய்தது கண்டு.

பொருள்:

ஒளிபொருந்திய என் நெற்றியானது பிரிவுத் துயரால் அழகு இழந்து பசலை நிறமடைந்ததைப் பார்த்து, அதனினும் மிஞ்சிய பெருந்துன்பத்தை அடைந்து என் கண்களும் பசலை நிறம் கொண்டுவிட்டன.

விரிவாக்கம்:

தலைவனின் பிரிவால் தலைவியின் உடலிலும் முகத்திலும் மாற்றங்கள் ஏற்படுகின்றன. முதலில் அவளது ஒளிரும் நெற்றி தன் பொலிவை இழந்து பசுமை கலந்த மஞ்சள் நிறமாக (பசலை) மாறுகிறது. அதைக் கண்ட அவளது கண்கள், "நெற்றிக்கே இந்த நிலைமை என்றால், காதலனைக் காணாது தவிக்கும் நமக்கு எவ்வளவு பெரிய துன்பம்!" என்று வருந்தி, நெற்றியை விடவும் மேலாகத் தாங்களும் பசலை நிறம் அடைந்து அழுகையில் மூழ்குகின்றன. தன் உடலின் ஒவ்வொரு உறுப்பும் ஒன்றன் துயரைக் கண்டு மற்றொன்று எவ்வாறு மேன்மேலும் வேதனையடைகின்றது என்பதைத் தலைவி இக்குறளில் நயம்பட எடுத்துரைக்கின்றாள்.

Seeing the bright forehead lose its luster and turn sallow, the eyes too have succumbed to deep sorrow and become discolored with grief.

Explanation:

The physical strain of separation spreads rapidly across the maiden's body. Observing her once-luminous forehead lose its radiant glow to the pallor of distress (pasalai), her eyes grow even more deeply afflicted. Overwhelmed by the plight of her fading beauty, the eyes themselves yield to profound sorrow, weeping endlessly and taking on the pale hue of yearning, as if grieving for the loss of the forehead's brightness.
