125/1247:திருக்குறள்:

காமம் விடுஒன்றோ நாண்விடு நன்னெஞ்சே

யானோ பொறேன்இவ் விரண்டு.

பொருள்:

என் நல்ல நெஞ்சமே! ஒன்று காமத்தை (காதல் நோயை) முழுமையாக விட்டுவிடு; அல்லது நாணத்தையாவது விட்டுவிடு; எதிரெதிரான இவ்விரண்டு உணர்வுகளையும் ஒரே நேரத்தில் தாங்கி நிற்கும் வலிமை எனக்கு இல்லை.

விரிவாக்கம்:

தலைவனின் பிரிவால் வாடும் தலைவி, ஒருபுறம் தன் காதலனைத் தேடிச் செல்லத் தூண்டும் காம உணர்வினாலும், மறுபுறம் பெண்ணிற்கே உரிய அடக்கத்தையும் வெட்கத்தையும் காக்கத் தூண்டும் நாண உணர்வினாலும் இடைவிடாது போராடுகிறாள். "என் நெஞ்சமே! காமமோ என்னை எல்லை மீறிச் செல்லப் பணிக்கிறது; நாணமோ என்னை அடியெடுத்து வைக்க விடாமல் தடுக்கிறது. ஒன்று காதலைத் துறந்து அமைதியாக இரு, அல்லது வெட்கத்தைத் துறந்து அவனிடம் என்னை அழைத்துச் செல். இந்த இரண்டு முரண்பாடான உணர்ச்சிகளையும் ஒரே நேரத்தில் தாங்கும் சக்தி என் உடலுக்கும் உயிருக்கும் இல்லை" என்று தன் மனதோடு போராடித் தலைவி நயம்பட எடுத்துரைப்பதாக இக்குறள் அமைகின்றது.

Meaning:

O my good heart! Either give up this intense passion or relinquish your maidenly modesty; I simply cannot endure the burden of both at once!

Explanation:

The maiden finds herself trapped in a deep emotional conflict. On one side, her intense passion drives her to cast aside all restraint and pursue her lover; on the other, her innate sense of bashfulness (naanam) holds her back to preserve her dignity. She pleads with her own heart to choose one path—either erase the desire completely or abandon the modesty that restrains her—because upholding these two opposing forces simultaneously is a torture her fragile spirit can no longer sustain.
