English Translation:
Thirukkural:
Vaalarrup Purkenra Kannum Avarsentra
Naalorrit Thaeyndha Viral.
Meaning:
My eyes have lost their luster gazing for his return, and my fingers are worn thin from marking the wall to count the days since he departed.
Explanation:
The maiden is consumed by the prolonged absence of her lover. Day after day, her eyes strain endlessly along the path he took, causing them to grow dim and lose their natural radiance. Simultaneously, to keep track of the grueling separation, she marks each passing day upon the wall with her fingers; the constant, relentless counting has left her fingertips literally worn down. The verse profoundly captures the physical toll exacted by unceasing anticipation and painful longing.
