128/1274:திருக்குறள்:

முகைமொக்குள் உள்ளது நாற்றம்போல் பேதை

நகைமொக்குள் உள்ளதொன்று உண்டு.

பொருள்:

விரியாத அரும்பின் மொட்டிற்குள்ளே அதன் நறுமணம் அடங்கிக் கிடப்பது போல, அறியாமையும் மென்மையும் கொண்ட இத்தலைவியின் மலர்ந்த புன்னகை அரும்பிற்குள்ளே ஏதோ ஒரு ரகசியக் குறிப்பு அடங்கியிருக்கின்றது.

விரிவாக்கம்:

ஒரு பூவின் மொட்டு இன்னும் முழுமையாக விரியாத போது, அதனுடைய நறுமணம் வெளியே தெரியாமல் அந்த மொட்டிற்குள்ளேயே மறைந்திருக்கும். அதுபோலவே, தலைவி தன் உதடுகளில் தோற்றுவிக்கும் அரைகுறைப் புன்னகையின் உள்ளே ஒரு மறைமுகமான செய்தியும் ஆசையும் அடங்கியுள்ளன. வெளிப்படையாகச் சொல்லத் தயங்கும் அவள், அரும்பும் புன்னகையின் வழியே தன் மனதின் விருப்பத்தை உட்செலுத்தி உணர்த்துகிறாள் என்பதைத் தலைவன் நயம்பட உணர்வதாக இக்குறள் அமைகின்றது.

Explanation:

Before a flower fully blooms, its rich fragrance is subtly locked inside its bud. Drawing from this imagery, the lover observes that his maiden's delicate, half-formed smile holds a secret message.
