எழுதுங்கால் கோல்காணாக் கண்ணேபோல் கொண்கன்

பழிகாணேன் கண்ட இடத்து.

பொருள்:

கண்ணுக்கு மை தீட்டும்போது, அஞ்சனம் தீட்டும் கோலினைக் கண் தானே காண முடியாதது போல, என் காதலனைக் நேரில் கண்ட காலத்தில் அவனிடம் உள்ள தவறுகளை நான் காண்பதில்லை.

விரிவாக்கம்:

கண்ணில் மை தீட்டும் கோலானது கண்ணுக்கு மிக அருகில் இருக்கும்போதும், அதை அக்கண்ணால் பார்க்க முடியாது. அதுபோலவே, பிரிந்திருக்கும் காலத்தில் தலைவனின் குறைகளை எண்ணி வருந்தும் தலைவி, அவனைக் நேரில் கண்ட மாத்திரத்தில் அவனது அன்பில் திளைத்து அவனுடைய எந்தக் குறையையும் காண்பதில்லை. காதலனின் அருகாமை தலைவியின் கோபத்தையும் குறைகளையும் எவ்வாறு மறக்கடிக்கச் செய்கிறது என்பதை இக்குறள் நயம்பட எடுத்துரைக்கின்றது.

Meaning:

Just as the eye cannot see the applicator rod while applying kohl to itself, I fail to see any of my lover's faults when I look upon him.

Explanation:

When a person applies kohl to their own eyes, the applicator rod is so intimately close that the eye itself cannot view it. Drawing a poetic parallel, the beloved explains that although she remembers her partner's shortcomings when apart, the moment he is right before her, his overwhelming presence and affection blind her to every single one of his faults.
