131:1302:திருக்குறள்:

உப்பமைந் தற்றால் புலவி அதுசிறிது

மிக்கற்றால் நீள விடல்.

பொருள்:

காதலர்களிடையே நிகழும் செல்ல ஊடலானது உணவில் சரியான அளவு உப்பைச் சேர்ப்பது போன்றது; ஆனால், அந்த ஊடலைத் தீர்க்காமல் அளவோடு நிறுத்தாமல் நீட்டிக்க விடுவது உணவில் உப்பு அதிகமானால் அதன் சுவை கெடுவது போன்றதாகும்.

விரிவாக்கம்:

உணவுக்கு நற்சுவையைத் தருவது அளவாகச் சேர்க்கப்படும் உப்பே ஆகும். அதுபோலவே, காதல் வாழ்க்கைக்குச் சுவையையும் இன்பத்தையும் கூட்டுவது அளவோடு கொள்ளும் செல்ல ஊடலாகும். ஆனால், உணவில் உப்பு மிகுந்தால் அது உண்ண முடியாதபடி சுவையற்றுப் போவதைப் போல, ஊடலைச் சமாதானப்படுத்தாமல் நீண்ட நேரம் நீட்டிக்கவிட்டால் அது காதலின் இனிமையையே கெடுத்து, இரு மனங்களுக்கும் இடையிலான பிணைப்பைப் பிரித்துவிடும் என்பதை இக்குறள் நயம்பட எடுத்துரைக்கின்றது.
