திருக்குறள்:

சிறப்பொடு பூசனை செல்லாது வானம்

வறக்குமேல் வானோர்க்கும் ஈண்டு.

பொருள்:

மழை பெய்யாமல் வானம் வறண்டு போகுமானால், இவ்வுலகில் தேவர்களுக்காக நடத்தப்படும் விழாக்களும் நாள்தோறும் நடைபெறும் வழிபாடுகளும் நடைபெறாமல் போ போய்விடும்.

விரிவாக்கம்:

வான்மழை பொழியாமல் பொய்த்துவிட்டால், பூமியில் வறட்சி ஏற்பட்டு மனிதர்களின் அன்றாட வாழ்க்கையும் பொருளாதாரமும் பாதிக்கப்படும். இதனால் இறைவனுக்குச் செய்யப்படும் திருவிழாக்களும், கோவில்களில் நடைபெறும் தினசரிப் பூஜைகளும் வழிபாடுகளும் கூடத் தடைபட்டுப் போகும். மனித வாழ்வின் செழிப்பு மட்டுமன்றி, ஆன்மிக வழிபாடுகளும் மழையின் அருளாலேயே சாத்தியமாகின்றன என்பதை இக்குறள் எடுத்துரைக்கின்றது.

If the heavens dry up and rain fails, neither annual festivals nor daily worship will be conducted even for the celestial gods here on earth.

Explanation:

All human endeavors, including spiritual practices and religious celebrations, depend on a prosperous and sustained society. When rain fails, agricultural collapse and hardship force people to pause grand festivities and rituals. Rain is thus the foundation for both temporal life and spiritual devotions.
